New turf sits on loose subsoil that keeps settling, which is why a familiar ground can turn unrecognisable overnight.
A relaid square plays strangely for years and the record book pretends otherwise
A ground digs out its square in the off season, brings in fresh soil, lays new turf, and reopens looking immaculate. Then it produces three matches nobody can read. Low scores where there should be runs, uneven bounce on a surface that photographs perfectly, a spinner turning it square in the second over.
This is not bad groundsmanship. It is a square that has not finished compacting, and compaction takes years, not months.
The mechanism is worth understanding because it explains behaviour that otherwise looks random. A cricket pitch is layers of soil compressed by rolling until the profile is dense enough to bounce a ball consistently. Fresh soil is full of air pockets. Rolling closes them from the top down, but the deeper layers only settle under repeated load and repeated wetting and drying cycles, and until the profile is uniform, different parts of the same strip carry different densities. A ball landing on a firm patch behaves normally. A ball landing eighteen inches away on a softer one sits up or squats.
That is the definition of variable bounce, and it is why a new square can be dangerous while looking healthy.
There is a second effect nobody accounts for. The bond between the new turf's root zone and the soil beneath it is weak for the first couple of seasons, so the top can shear under a bowler's follow-through and under spikes. Footmarks form faster and deeper. A match that should have stayed flat starts turning on the third day because the surface has been torn rather than worn.
Here is the part I would actually change. Venue statistics get carried across a relay as though nothing happened. Average first-innings totals, spin-versus-pace splits, chasing records, all of it pooled from before and after. A preview will tell you that a ground has historically favoured batters when the historical square is now in a landfill somewhere.
Any serious analysis should reset a venue's record the season its square is relaid, and label it clearly for at least three years after.
It would look strange. Half the grounds on a major circuit would show almost no usable history. That is not a flaw in the idea, that is an accurate description of what we know.
