The shape that looks least demanding on television produces the hardest physical pattern in football, and it wrecks calves.
Defending in a mid block is a deceleration problem before it is a tactical one
Total distance covered says a mid block team runs less than a high pressing one. It is true and it is one of the more misleading facts in the sport.
The distance is lower because the block moves as a unit and the movements are short. What the number does not capture is the pattern of those movements. A player in a mid block does not run. He shuffles, checks, accelerates three metres, stops dead, changes direction, and does it again about six hundred times. Almost none of those actions is longer than five seconds and almost all of them end in a hard brake.
Braking is the expensive bit. Slowing down loads the muscle eccentrically, which means the muscle is producing force while it is being stretched, and eccentric load is what causes microdamage and delayed soreness and, when it happens often enough while fatigued, the calf and quad problems that keep recurring in players who never sprint.
Anybody who has watched a defensive midfielder in a deep side come off after seventy minutes looking heavy-legged while his sprint count sits at four will recognise this. He is not unfit. He has been braking all afternoon.
There is a coaching consequence that I think is undervalued. If a team is going to defend in a mid block, its physical preparation should look nothing like a pressing side's. Less long running, far more repeated change of direction, and a serious amount of eccentric strength work, the boring stuff with slow lowering phases that players hate because it does not feel like football.
Sides that switch systems mid season sometimes get this wrong in a way that shows up six weeks later. A squad conditioned all summer for a high press gets asked to sit in a block after a manager change, the running numbers drop, everyone says the players are working less, and then the treatment room fills up with calf strains that nobody connects to the change.
The claim I will defend is this. Load is a shape, not a total. Two players can cover the same eleven kilometres and finish the game with completely different tissue damage, and the metric printed on the graphic tells you nothing about which is which.
Distance covered is the most reassuring useless number in the game.
