Distance runners lift heavy for stiffness, not for speed

A runner who has just squatted heavy has not done speed work. They have done something worth doing, but the reason it works has almost nothing to do with running fast, and the confusion leads to some genuinely poor scheduling.

The nervous system recruits muscle fibres in a fairly predictable order, from the smaller fatigue resistant ones up to the large fast ones, and the recruitment is driven by force demand. A heavy lift creates a very high force demand at a slow movement speed. That reaches the high threshold fibres by force. A sprint reaches them a different way, through the speed of the contraction and the rate at which force has to be produced. Both get to the same fibres. They are not the same stimulus and they do not produce the same adaptation.

What heavy lifting actually gives a distance runner is largely about stiffness and economy. Stronger tendons and better coordinated force production mean less energy lost on each ground contact, and less energy lost per step across twenty five thousand steps is a big number. It also raises the ceiling of force available, which makes normal running a smaller percentage of maximum and therefore more sustainable. That is a slow, structural benefit measured across months.

Filed under speed work, though, it gets treated as a sharpening tool. Coaches put it close to races because that is where you put speed. That is backwards. Heavy lifting produces days of residual fatigue and connective tissue soreness, and its benefits are cumulative rather than immediate, so it belongs in the base period and in the middle of hard training blocks, not in the ten days before a target race.

The mislabel also causes the opposite error. Programmes that lift heavy in the winter often drop it entirely in the season, treating it as preparation rather than maintenance. Strength decays. The economy benefit decays with it, right when the athlete needs it most, and by the time it shows up in results nobody connects the two.

My position is that the gym work should be scheduled like base mileage and the actual speed work should be running fast, on the track, in spikes, with full recovery. Two separate jobs.

Calling the barbell speed work is not a semantic quibble. It is why so many runners arrive at their goal race strong in March and hollow in July.
