The image used to separate sprinters at the line looks like a photograph and is not. Understanding what it actually is explains both its accuracy and its strange appearance.
The camera images a plane, not a scene
A finish camera captures a single vertical line aligned with the finish plane, sampling it many thousands of times per second.
Those slices are assembled side by side into an image whose horizontal axis is time rather than space. The picture is a chart with a photographic appearance.
This is why athletes appear stretched or compressed. A slower runner occupies more time slices and therefore more image width.
Reading the image is a defined procedure
An official identifies the first point of the torso to reach the plane, since the rules define the finish by the torso rather than by a head, arm or leg.
The horizontal position of that point is read against the time axis, and the time is taken directly from the image.
Because the axis is time, the reading is a measurement rather than an interpolation. Precision depends on the sampling rate, which is why high rates are specified.
Why athletes lean
The rule rewards getting the torso to the plane first, so a lean converts forward momentum into earlier torso arrival at the cost of some speed.
The technique exists because of how the finish is defined and measured. A different definition would produce a different finishing technique.
The image records this precisely, which is how races separated by thousandths are resolved without anyone judging by eye.
Storage is part of the certification
Finish images are retained as evidence supporting the result, and record ratification generally requires the image to be available for examination.
The system's synchronization with the start is logged with the image, since a time is only meaningful if the clock's zero is established.
Retention periods are set by competition rules. A record application months later requires the image still to exist, which makes storage policy part of the record process.
What it cannot resolve
The image tells you when a torso reached the plane and nothing about what happened before it, so contact and lane infringements are judged from ordinary video.
It also cannot resolve a genuine dead heat, which is why the rules provide for shared placings rather than forcing a separation.
Increasing the sampling rate does not remove that possibility. At some resolution two athletes arrive in the same slice, and the rules have to say what happens then.
