How A Wide Becomes A Number On The Scorecard

A wide begins as a signal from an umpire and ends as an entry in three separate columns. The conversion between those two states is where several familiar statistics acquire their quirks.

The signal is a judgment, not a measurement

An umpire calls a wide when a delivery passes out of reach of the batter in a normal stance. Nothing is measured; the call rests entirely on the umpire's read of reach and stance.

That threshold shifts with format and with playing conditions. Limited-overs cricket applies it far more tightly than the longer game, so the same delivery can be a wide in one match and legitimate in another.

Because the input is judgment, the resulting number inherits that judgment. Nobody reading a bowler's economy rate is told which portion of it came from a marginal call.

Three columns move at once

The scorer records a run to the batting side under extras, charges the run to the bowler's analysis, and adds a delivery that does not count toward the over. Three effects, one signal.

The last of those is the one readers forget. A wide has to be re-bowled, so an over with two wides contains eight deliveries and eight chances for something else to happen.

Runs taken off a wide compound this. Byes run while the ball is loose are added to the extras column too, and all of them are debited to the bowler who sent it down.

What it does to a bowler's figures

Economy rate is runs divided by overs, and wides inflate the numerator without touching the denominator. A bowler who concedes several is penalized twice over in the same ratio.

Strike rate is affected in the other direction. Wides are not counted as balls bowled, so a bowler who sprays deliveries wide does not have those attempts held against his balls-per-wicket figure.

The two statistics therefore disagree about the same spell. One treats the wide as expensive, the other treats it as though it never happened, and neither is wrong within its own definition.

Why the batting record is cleaner

Extras are credited to the team, not to the batter on strike. A batter's individual score and strike rate are untouched by anything the bowler sends down wide.

This is deliberate. The batter had no opportunity to score from the delivery, so charging it against a personal strike rate would penalize a player for an opponent's mistake.

The consequence is that team totals and the sum of individual scores never match. The gap is the extras column, and in a tight limited-overs match it is often decisive.

Why the definition keeps being tightened

Administrators have narrowed the wide line in white-ball cricket over successive rewrites of playing conditions. The intent is to stop bowlers from using deliberate width as a low-risk defensive tactic.

Every tightening changes the statistical baseline. Economy rates from before a rule change are not directly comparable with those after it, though almost no published table carries that caveat.

That silent discontinuity is the general problem with rule-driven statistics. The number stays the same shape while the thing it counts has been redefined underneath it.

A batter with one gear is still worth picking

The phrase you hear in selection meetings is that a player is one-dimensional. It is said as a criticism. I have never fully understood why, given that the format is short enough that a team only needs a handful of dimensions in total and can distribute them across eleven bodies.

Consider the batter who can only hit down the ground and only against pace. He is useless in the middle overs against two spinners on a turning surface. He is also, in the right six deliveries, the most valuable player on the field, because the thing he does badly never comes up and the thing he does well comes up repeatedly.

The counter is obvious and it is about flexibility. If a wicket falls at the wrong moment, a specialist walks into a situation he cannot handle, and you have burned a slot. That is real. But it is a scheduling problem, not a talent problem, and scheduling problems have solutions that talent problems do not.

What actually happens is worse than either. Sides pick a squad full of players who are competent in every phase and outstanding in none, then wonder why they keep posting adequate totals and losing to somebody who had one man go berserk for four overs. Competence across the board is a way of guaranteeing you are never the reason a match turns.

I would rather carry two narrow players and accept that in a third of matches one of them is dead weight. The distribution of outcomes matters more than the average, because you do not get half a trophy for finishing consistently mid-table in a knockout competition.

There is a coaching dimension to this that gets ignored. Telling a specialist to broaden his game usually makes him worse at the thing he was picked for, because the technique that lets a player hit a length ball over long-on is not the technique that lets him work it into the leg side. They fight each other. He ends up in the middle, hitting neither shot with conviction, and within a season he is a squad player.

Leave him alone. Let him be strange.

The best selections I have watched were not the most complete cricketers on the list. They were the ones whose weakness the captain had a plan to hide.
