Winners, forced errors and unforced errors are the backbone of tennis match statistics. All three are assigned by a person watching the point and deciding immediately.
The three categories are exhaustive by construction
Every point that ends in play is coded as a winner, a forced error or an unforced error. Nothing falls outside, which forces a decision on every ambiguous ball.
A winner is a shot the opponent could not reach. A forced error is a miss under pressure that the opponent created. An unforced error is a miss the player owns.
The middle category carries all the difficulty. Deciding how much pressure counts as forcing is precisely the judgment that the classification cannot avoid.
The definitional line moves
Operations differ on where forcing begins. Some treat any ball hit on the run as forcing; others require the player to have been genuinely stretched.
Because the definition is house policy rather than a tour standard, unforced error counts from different tournaments and providers are not strictly comparable.
The same match statisticized twice by different operations would produce different splits. The winner count would be close; the error split would not.
Why the game's evolution strained it
The categories were devised when rallies were shorter and pressure was more visible. Modern baseline exchanges generate pressure through court position and pace rather than through obvious stretching.
A player pinned behind the baseline for eight strokes and missing on the ninth is coded unforced under many definitions, which misrepresents the point badly.
This is the standard criticism of the statistic, and it is why analysts increasingly prefer measures built on ball position and shot quality instead.
How the number still earns its place
Within a single match, coded consistently by one operator, the split is genuinely informative. It tracks who was dictating and when a player's discipline broke down.
The comparison it supports is internal — this set against that set, this player against the opponent in the same match — rather than across matches or eras.
Broadcasters use it for that reason. It explains a momentum shift in one number, which is a real function even if it is a weak archival statistic.
What replaced it in serious analysis
Ball-tracking systems record where each shot landed and how fast it traveled, allowing pressure to be estimated from geometry rather than judged from the chair.
Those measures are reproducible: the same match processed twice yields the same output, which is the property the unforced error count lacks.
The older statistic persists on graphics because it is instantly legible. Legibility and reliability are different virtues, and tennis broadcasting has consistently chosen the first.
