Match statistics at a major tournament are produced by trained operators sitting courtside. The quality of the output depends almost entirely on how that workforce is managed.
The job is faster than it looks
An operator codes each point's outcome, the shot that ended it, and the category of the ending stroke, within the few seconds before the next point begins.
Serving statistics add further entries: first or second serve, ace, double fault, and placement where the system captures it.
Sustaining this across a five-set match requires the categories to be internalized rather than looked up, which is what training is for.
The manual is the standard
Operators work to a written definitions document specifying exactly what counts as a winner, a forced error, a net approach and every other coded category.
Training runs through edge cases explicitly, because the ordinary cases are unambiguous and the disagreements only ever come from the margins.
Consistency across operators matters more than any individual's judgment. A statistic coded consistently but debatably is more useful than one coded correctly by half the team.
Testing precedes accreditation
Prospective operators are assessed by coding recorded matches and having their output compared against a reference coding of the same footage.
Agreement rates determine whether someone is accredited, and for which courts. High-profile matches are staffed by the most reliable operators.
This is the same structure used for scorers in American professional sports, where accreditation depends on demonstrated accuracy rather than on interest in the game.
Auditing continues during the event
Samples of coded matches are checked against video during the tournament, and systematic drift by an individual operator can be identified and corrected mid-event.
Drift is the realistic failure mode rather than random error. An operator who begins coding a category slightly differently will do so consistently, which is detectable.
Corrections are applied to the published data, which is one of the reasons match statistics can change slightly after a match concludes.
What automation has and has not replaced
Ball tracking now captures placement, speed and rally length automatically, removing the categories where machines are better than people.
What remains manual is the interpretive coding — shot selection, tactical categories, error attribution — which is where the judgment lives.
The workforce shrank and its work became harder, since the easy entries were automated and the contestable ones were left behind.
