Every ball of a professional cricket match is entered into software, transmitted, and rendered on screens within a second. The document that actually decides disputes is still a paper book filled in by hand.
Why a paper book survived the software
Scoring software is a convenience layer built on top of a much older duty. The scorer's job is defined by the laws of the game, and the laws describe a record, not a database.
That record has to survive a power failure, a network outage, and a software crash. A paper book does all three without a contingency plan, which is why it was never retired when laptops arrived.
In practice the two run in parallel. One scorer works the software, another works the book, and the book is what gets signed at the close of play by both scorers and often the umpires.
What the signature actually certifies
A signed scorebook is an attestation that the totals reconcile: runs scored equal runs conceded plus extras, and dismissals equal wickets credited. It is an accounting close, not a summary.
Until that reconciliation happens, the score is provisional. Broadcast figures are working numbers, and a discrepancy discovered during the close can move a total by a run without anyone at the ground noticing.
Once signed, the book becomes the version of events that a governing body will consult. Anything derived later — averages, career aggregates, statistical archives — traces back to it rather than to the live feed.
How a mismatch gets found
Scorers reconcile continuously rather than at the end. Each over closes with a check that the bowler's analysis, the batters' individual scores, and the team total all agree with one another.
A single missed dot ball breaks that agreement immediately, which is the point of the design. Errors are caught within an over instead of surfacing as an unexplainable gap two hours later.
American readers used to baseball's official scorer will recognize the structure. One person is designated as the authority, works to a written rulebook, and files a document that outlives the game.
Where the electronic record fits
Ball-by-ball software captures far more than the book does: line, length, shot type, fielding position. None of that is part of the official record, and none of it is signed for.
That distinction matters when the two disagree. The enriched data is a description of the match, while the book is the determination of it, and only one of them is authoritative.
Statistical services that publish career figures generally reconcile against the official record where they can. Where they cannot, they carry a note, which is why some historical entries remain flagged as disputed.
Why the redundancy is not wasteful
Duplicating effort looks inefficient until a scoring system fails mid-innings. Recovery from software failure means rebuilding state, and rebuilding state requires a source that was never inside the software.
The book provides that source at essentially no marginal cost. Two scorers were going to be present anyway, and one of them writing rather than typing changes nothing about staffing.
The cost of the alternative is what keeps the practice alive. A lost innings of scoring cannot be reconstructed from memory, and a governing body will not certify a total nobody can evidence.
