A professional schedule packs a large number of games into several months, with travel between cities across time zones. Recovery windows are frequently short.

Cumulative exposure rather than any single game creates the risk. That is why the intervention targets total minutes rather than specific matches, and why it is applied before any symptom appears.
How workload is monitored
Teams track minutes played, distance covered, accelerations and jump counts using positional and wearable systems. The data is compared against each player's recent baseline.

Whether resting a healthy player reduces injury risk specifically is harder to demonstrate, since the counterfactual is unobservable. Teams act on probability rather than proof.
The practice has nonetheless spread because the downside of overuse is severe and visible. Caution is cheaper than a lost season.
